I’m building my own little bee garden all from scratch, it has been a lot of work and its also been a lot of fun! Its still a work in progress, but I wanted to share what I’ve gotten done so far before I start planting the flowers and other plants.
Before I got my bees I had to get their new location all prepared, I live on a mountain so I had to dig out a flat area where I could place the hives.
I found some leftover sandstone and flagstone pieces behind our back shed, and also some granite. After digging out a spot, I laid out the stones and soon, I plan to fill the space between them with woodchips and ground cover flowers.
The hives are set on a super sturdy stand that is handmade out of cement blocks, wood, and a flagstone slab. Its design was created and built by Chris and Jeremy, these awesome guys own a Colorado beekeeping company and do swarm removals. They also set up my electric fence, and did a wonderful job! I highly recommend their help and advice!
If any of you who are reading this do some hobby gardening, know what flowers bees love, or have any tips or advice on flowers/bees/gardens! Please drop me a comment below, its a work in progress and I am open to all your feedback!
Tips:
- The ground you place your hives on should be level, or mostly level
- This so when the bees draw out honeycomb, which they build straight down, isn’t misshaped
- My hives are tilted slightly forward, this provides a runoff for rain and snow
- Make sure that your bees have plenty of ventilation under their hives
- my bottom board is elevated and screened so they can get proper air flow
- If you live in bear country, like me, you NEED an electric fence! It would be a real shame to lose your bees and all their hard work!
- Make sure your bees have a water source
