Beehives, when you buy them, typically come in a basic white color. This is because white reflects sunlight which helps keep the hive from overheating. However, my bees and I live in the mountains, and we aren’t too concerned with overheating. So if you’re like me, and wanna add a little pizazz and character to your hives with the perfect pops of color, I suggest painting!!
Tips to consider:
- Most paints are toxic, and ALL paints shouldn’t be injected by people or bees
- Make sure when your painting, you DO NOT paint inside the hive
- This includes frames and inside the box
- Unless you plan to do multiple coats of a base color, you don’t need that much paint
- I got sample paints of rainbow colors at the home depot, and haven’t used HALF of a container yet
- Use spray paint for the base coat, it’s faster, cheaper, and you’re less likely going to waste any. (Home Depot has some great spray paint ideal for the outdoors)
- Use sample paint sizes for your details and designs
- Make sure your paint is made for weathering and the outdoors, or else it will all go to waste
- Paint the hives BEFORE you get the bees!
- HAVE FUN!
I had a blast when painting the hives, and I’m sure you will too! You can find some really cool painting inspiration on Pinterest if you’re short on ideas. Happy Painting!
